Funding for Health Sciences Faculty Leadership Skills Training

Faculty leadership training promotes an engaged, diverse and inclusive faculty in academic medicine. UC San Diego Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences (VCHS) and the Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) supports funding for faculty development programs at UC San Diego and high quality nationally recognized programs.

Eligibility and Funding Support for Leadership Training Opportunities 

Health Sciences (HS) faculty at all ranks and series with at least a 50% salaried appointment are eligible to apply. Applications for HS funding support are accepted on a rolling basis and must include a description of the applicant's current and potential leadership roles in UC San Diego Health Sciences, CV and letter of endorsement from the sponsoring Department. Note that Departments are expected to cover a portion of the training and/or travel expenses and the endorsement letter must confirm this support.  

Specific application instructions are indicated below for each selected training opportunity. A committee comprised of Health Sciences senior faculty leadership will review and select recipients for HS funding support.

Leadership training opportunities for Health Sciences (HS) faculty within UC San Diego are outlined below with additional information including available funding support. 


National Leadership Training Opportunities

Health Sciences funding is also available for selected high quality national leadership training opportunities external to UC San Diego offerings. Those opportunities are outlined below with additional information including available funding support. Department support for travel expenses is required for the applicant to be eligible for HS funding. NOTE: Due to COVID, there will be a cost-share for all virtual event registration.

Other high quality leadership trainings not listed may be considered for funding.  Please send your request to hsfacaffairs@ucsd.edu.

​$1,700 - $2,225 registration only (not including travel, lodging, meals)

​2.5 - 3.5 days at various seminar locations

​Estimated Cost
$25,000 ($15,600 registration + travel, lodging, meals)
Support Structure
Support Structure 1/3 faculty, 1/3 Department and 1/3 Dean, CEO or VCHS
Time Commitment
1 year fellowship (including three onsite 1-week sessions)

2021-2022 application is due January 8, 2021 midnight EST.
​Additional Requirements
Applicants must be nominated by the Dean or CEO of the Health System for ELAM and first apply to ELAM. After acceptance into ELAM, faculty may submit a UCSD HS Faculty Leadership Training Funding Application

Support for this training will require that the faculty member remain at UC San Diego for at least 2 years after completion of leadership training or forfeit funding, requiring payback to the institution.

Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Executive Education
