The UC San Diego Health Clinical Laboratories and the Department of Pathology have partnered to create one of the most successful, state-of-the art reference laboratory services in the Western United States. Based at the Center for Advanced Laboratory Medicine (CALM), adjacent to the UC San Diego Medical Center and main University campuses in La Jolla, we provide a broad range of clinical laboratory and pathology outreach services to support today’s most complex and challenging healthcare and research needs.
Our services include routine, day-to-day diagnostic testing for physician offices, clinics, and long-term care facilities to the latest specialized, esoteric testing required by other hospitals, integrated healthcare delivery networks, and major transplantation and organ/tissue donor centers, as well as serving as a centralized referral center for clinical trials in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry. Among the range offerings available are an expansive menu of services from our CLIA-accredited molecular diagnostics, cytogenetics, immunogeneticsb/transplantation (HLA), molecular microbiology/virology laboratories, and a revolutionary center for personalized medicine and translational genomics (which focuses on next generation and exome sequencing). We also provide fully integrated hematopathology services (supplementing morphological diagnoses with the latest in molecular, cytogenetic/FISH, and immunophenotyping/flow cytometric techniques), and everything from basic histologic processing to expert subspecialty professional consultation in surgical pathology and cytopathology. Our advanced, high-throughput core automation laboratories (and the associated center for technology innovation) support both routine and specialized testing in clinical chemistry, diagnostic immunology, hematology and coagulation, along with a high-tech toxicology and drug analysis facility that develops industry-leading mass spectrometric approaches to address challenging analytical problems. Specialized and complex testing and consultation services are also available in the area of transfusion medicine/blood banking, and we now offer a state-of-the-art biorepository and human tissue resource center on-site with the opening of the CALM.
UC San Diego Health’s reference laboratory and outreach services are available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, and serves local, regional, national and international clients.
