Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Pathology Service

The Gastrointestinal & Hepatobiliary Pathology Service provides comprehensive pathology services related to diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, biliary tract, appendix and other associated organs, and is the highest volume surgical pathology service. Our team of board-certified pathologists have extensive experience and expertise on all aspects of Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Pathology, inclusive of both neoplastic and non-neoplastic disorders. Robust institutional liver disease and transplant programs facilitate our evaluation of more than 1000 medical, transplant and neoplastic liver cases each year. Additionally, UC San Diego Health has large adult IBD and Celiac disease programs, providing rich diagnostic material in these areas. We have ready access to immunohistochemistry, molecular techniques and sequencing assays for diagnostic and research purposes.

The Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary service participates in multidisciplinary clinical conferences, including liver multidisciplinary conference, NAPRC (National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer), GI/endocrine conference, pancreatobiliary tumor board, IBD conference, Liver Cancer Group (LCG) as well as other ad hoc clinical case reviews with the pertinent clinical Hepatobiliary and Gastrointestinal teams.

There are many translational and basic science research opportunities in association with clinical colleagues or the San Diego Digestive Diseases Research Center (SDDRC). The Department of Pathology offers one highly competitive, one-year Gastrointestinal Pathology fellowship each year.

We are available for consultation on all aspects of Gastrointestinal & Hepatobiliary Pathology.
