The Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine was established in 1969 and since then has grown to have 40+ faculty members. Our research space is located in several buildings on and off campus including the Clinical Teaching Facility, the Antiviral Research Center in Hillcrest, the Stein Clinical Research Building, the Moores Cancer Center, the Biomedical Research Facility, the San Diego VA Medical Center, the Cellular and Molecular Medicine East Building, the Jacobs Medical Center, the Owen Clinic and the George Palade Laboratories for Cellular and Molecular Medicine.
Major international collaborations in Mozambique, Mexico, India, South Africa, and Peru play important roles in the Division’s expansion of its international programs. The division continues to grow and expand with the development of our international medicine program, as well the ongoing studies and interests of our faculty.
About the Division Chief
Dr. Davey Smith is the Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health. Along with Dr. Smith, the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health is led by Dr. Constance Benson as the Vice Chief of Education, Dr. Randy Taplitz as the Vice Chief of Clinical Affairs, and Dr. Jamila K. Stockman as the Vice Chief of Global Public Health.
Dr. Smith received his medical degree from East Tennessee State University in 1996. He completed his residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at UCSD in 2000 and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at UCSD in 2003. Dr. Smith has been a member of the UC San Diego Faculty since 2003 and was promoted to Professor of Medicine in 2013. In addition to his role as Chief, Dr. Smith currently serves as the Vice Chair for Faculty in the Department of Medicine and is the current co-director of the San Diego Center for AIDS Research. Dr. Smith is internationally recognized as a highly regarded researcher, clinician and educator in the field of infectious diseases and HIV medicine. He has built an impressive record in HIV-related research with over 200 peer-reviewed papers since joining the UCSD faculty, and his list of campus leadership and service roles since joining the University is impressive.
