The Scrubs Addressing the Firearm Epidemic (SAFE) chapter at UCSD SOM aims to raise awareness and educate healthcare provdiers regarding discussing gun violence, safe firearm practices, and injury prevention with patients and parents.
In the United States, the firearm homicide rate is greater than 25 times that of other comparable developed countries; furthermore, 2020 and 2021 data showed that the leading cause of death for individuals aged 1-19 was firearm violence. As healthcare providers, we can have a direct impact in addressing this worsening epidemic. Discussing firearm safety habits with patients and parents increases the number of firearms that are kept locked and unloaded in homes, which improves safety. However, many healthcare professionals do not feel comfortable counseling patients regarding safe firearm ownership. Scrubs Addressing the Firearm Epidemic (SAFE) is a nationwide organization with the goal of helping educate medical students and professionals in firearm safety counseling to mitigate risk for injury and deaths from firearms. The UCSD chapter is dedicated to ensuring all healthcare providers feel comfortable talking to patients and parents about gun violence and injury prevention in the San Diego community.
