Volunteer Opportunities

Students from the 1980s learning outside

Are you interested in becoming active in the School of Medicine alumni community? The Medical Alumni Association is always looking for volunteers. There are a variety of opportunities available to fit your schedule and areas of interest.

Class Ambassadors

Become an alumni class ambassador today! We are looking for an ambassador from each class year to facility communication and connection between your classmates and fellow alumni.

Regional Events

Host a networking event for School of Medicine alumni in your area. The Medical Alumni Association can help you support your event with alumni in your region.

Med Connect

Engage with current medical students and fellow alumni by hosting fun social events in the San Diego area. Events can include movie nights, dinners, volunteer opportunites and more.

Career Connections Program

Provide mentorship and advice to current medical students through several options in our Career Connections program. Opportunities for engagement include:

Career Night

Held annually in the fall, you can share your career experiences and insights with first- and second-year medical students. The event includes short presentations, roundtable discussions and a casual dinner.

Dining with Docs

Host a dinner for a small group of students to learn more about your specialty, area of expertise and lifestyle associated with your chosen field of practice.

Alumni-Sponsored Study Breaks

Do you enjoy baking? Do you want to give students a taste of home? We are always looking for alumni to provide treats to students during test taking season. Sponsor a study break and visit with medical students in the student lounge in the Medical Education and Telemedicine Building.

Student-Run Free Clinic

Alumni wishing to donate their time and skills to the health and well-being of the underserved in San Diego County, while also mentoring and teaching medical students, are invited to volunteer at any of the four Student-Run Free Clinic sites. Volunteer faculty include both primary care and specialty physicians. Volunteers can work at the clinic as frequently as they choose, ranging from three times a month to once every three months, supervising students in compassionate, high-quality care for patients who have nowhere else to turn.

All attendings at the Free Clinic Project must be salaried or voluntary faculty members at UC San Diego School of Medicine. To learn more about volunteering with us and apply to become a member of the volunteer faculty, contact Lisa Deferville.
