Preceptorships

The Ambulatory Care Apprenticeship (ACA) is a “longitudinal experience” that runs concurrently with other courses in the core curriculum and continues through the academic year, beginning in September. First and/or second  year medical students spend two afternoons each month (1-5pm, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday), every other week, working with the clinical preceptor in their clinic.  On the weeks they are not in your clinic your student will be attending small group seminars at the UCSD/SOM campus as part of the Practice of Medicine course. The unique opportunity of working with a consistent preceptor allows the student/preceptor pair to establish a mentor relationship, see continuity of care in the clinic setting, and integrate knowledge learned in other core courses. The course places an emphasis on the students learning the best practices for history taking, physical examinations, patient interaction and note taking.

The Primary Care Core Clerkship (PCC) is a “longitudinal clerkship” that runs concurrently with other clerkships and continues through the entire year, beginning in May. Third year medical students spend three afternoons each month (1-5pm, Tuesdays or Fridays) working with the clinical preceptor in their clinic.  One afternoon each month your student will be absent from your clinic to attend a small group seminars at the UCSD/SOM campus. The unique opportunity of working with a consistent preceptor for an entire year allows the student/preceptor pair to establish a mentor relationship, see continuity of care in the clinic setting, and integrate knowledge learned in other core courses. The course places an emphasis on caring for patients with a whole-person approach, taking under consideration the socioeconomic factors and striving to practice prevention and patient education.
