Undergraduate Medical Education (UME)
- Admissions Multi-Mini Interviews (MMIs) – UGME Candidates
- MMIs are used by UCSD’s student admissions office as a selection tool to
evaluate and select students for medical school. Candidates are rotated
through an eight station interview process. One station utilizes a
special standardized patient case. This activity is also used for PRIME
candidates. PRIME is a system-wide effort at the University of
California to train physicians to be better abled to meet the diverse
needs of the California population who are traditionally underserved by
the medical system.
- Practice of Medicine (POM) – 1st and 2nd year
- Eight Group Objective Structured Clinical Exercises (G-OSCE)
- Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) at the end of
first and second year
- Pediatrics Mini-Block – (PEDS)
- Primary Care Core Clerkship Seminars (PCCC) – 3rd year
- PCCC cases include the following chief concerns
- Abdominal
- Headache
- Obesity
- Pain Management
- Pulmonary
- Clinical Progress Activity 1 and 2 (CPA) – 3rd year
- CPAs are a part of the Primary Care Core Clerkship and provides students
with an opportunity to take a pertinent history, perform an appropriate
physical exam, communicate and share information with patients as well
as receive individualized feedback from the SPs, their peers and a PCCC
faculty advisor.
- Geriatric Psychiatry – 3rd year
- Clinical Practice Exam (CPX) – 4th year
- CPX takes place at the beginning of 4th year and provides the students
the opportunity to encounter eight different cases. They are assessed on
their ability to establish a relationship of trust, take a focused
medical history, perform a focused physical exam and educate the patient
about their own care. Students must pass the CPX in order to graduate.

- Pharmacy Practice Experiences - 1st year
- Over the counter – drug counseling
- Smoking cessation counseling
- Insulin injection instruction
- Pharmacy Therapeutics - 3rd year
- Albuterol refill and asthma education
- Chronic pain counseling
Inter-Professional Educational Experience (IPE)
- This experience brings together students from:
- UCSD School of Medicine – 2nd year
- UCSD School of Pharmacy – 3rd year
- University of San Diego School of Nursing – 1st and 3rd years
- Students work in healthcare teams to provide patient care in both
the clinical setting; as well as, the hospital based/acute care setting.

- Clinical Practice Exercise (CPE)
- CPE is a clinical skills learning experience for both residents and
their preceptors
- Adolescent Medicine
- Family Medicine
- Ophthalmology
- Reproductive Medicine
- Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology (Joint program – UCSD and
SDSU)
Continuing Medical Education (CME)
- Quality Improvement in Correctional Medicine (QUICM) - this was an
assessment of all prison doctors in the State of California due to a
class action lawsuit won by prisoners regarding the poor medical care
they were receiving.
- Faculty Advanced Clinical and Teaching Skills (FACTS) – a program
to improve physician’s confidence in their ability to handle difficult
clinician-patient relationships by presenting an opportunity to practice
their interpersonal skills in a safe, non-threatening environment.
