The UC San Diego MSTP provides research and clinical training to highly qualified students for whom prior exposure to medicine and strong research experiences indicate a commitment for a career in academic medicine. In keeping with the extensive variety and collaborative nature of research in the La Jolla biomedical community, the UC San Diego MSTP offers a wealth of scientific opportunities for its students and a flexible educational program for individual trainees.
The UC San Diego MSTP, a federally funded program, actively seeks women and underrepresented students and is committed to enrollment of a diverse body of talented students. Out-of-state residents are considered on an equal basis with other applicants. Applicants should have previous experience in both the research and clinical aspects of science and medicine. Trainees must be US citizens, or have permanent, legal residence in the United States.
In addition to offering MD/PhD training, the UC San Diego MSTP has developed a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program. The MSTP-SURF is targeted to undergraduates from underrepresented minority groups and provides an opportunity to conduct biomedical research and to have clinical experiences for 8 weeks during the summer.
