UC San Diego School of Medicine -SURVIVORS Human Rights Clinic

human-rights-clinicUC San Diego School of Medicine has partnered with SURVIVORS, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting survivors of torture, to establish the UC San Diego School of Medicine-SURVIVORS Human Rights Clinic. Located in San Diego, a key region for asylum seekers, the clinic addresses the significant barriers these individuals face in accessing medical, legal, and immigration support.

Our Mission:

  • Education: Provide medical students with opportunities to observe forensic evaluations, identify signs of torture, and assist in affidavit preparation.
  • Service: Offer pro-bono forensic medical and psychological evaluations to survivors of torture in the San Diego area.
  • Advocacy: Promote awareness and advocate for immigration, healthcare access, and human rights through research and outreach.

Partnership:

In collaboration with SURVIVORS, a San Diego-based accredited healing center, we work together to support torture survivors with mental health services, medical case management, and more.

How to Get Involved:

Medical students interested in participating undergo orientation and asylum medicine training (Istanbul Protocol) to participate in evaluations. Leadership roles are available for organizing schedules and pairing students with physicians.

For physicians, mid level providers, psychologists and social workers interested in being involved in this work, please contact SURVIVORS directly.
