Memorial Scholarships
The UC San Diego Medical Alumni Association awards 2 memorial scholarships anually to current medical students:
- Bud Whipple Memorial Endowed Scholarship
- Carrlene Harper Memorial Scholarship
Criteria & Nomination Information
For Nominators:
- You may nominate more than one student for each award.
- Students are permitted to nominate themselves.
- You will receive a confirmation by email when your nomination has been received.
For Nominees:
Once nominated, students will be asked to submit a brief application along with a personal statement and letter of support from a faculty member or community member to be considered for the awards.
Bud Whipple Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Medical Alumni Association Class of 1981 established a partial, one-year scholarship in memory of Bud Whipple, a former medical student with Marfans Syndrome. He died unexpectedly in his third year from a dissecting aneurysm. Bud was loved for his human kindness, and throughout his life he made the most of his abilities in a selfless manner.
Scholarship: Awarded to one Second Year Medical Student
Award amount: $10,000
Criteria:
- The student must be in good academic standing.
- The student, like Bud, must have earned the respect of his or her classmates and faculty by growing through adversity in life.
- The student must have demonstrated an unselfish commitment to others, outstanding character, and displayed exceptional human kindness to his/her colleagues and patients.
Deadline for Nominations: November 15, 2023
Note: If the student selected for this scholarship is currently a financial aid recipient, this award would be part of his/her financial package.
Carrlene Harper Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of former OSA Staff member, Carrlene Harper.
Scholarship: Awarded to one Third Year Medical Student
Award amount: $2,000
Criteria:
- The student must be in good academic standing.
- The student must exhibit excellence in community service (local, medical school, or other) during enrollment in medical school.
- The student must demonstrate a financial need.
