2025 Physician and House Officer of the Year
As we approach National Doctors’ Day on March 30, we recognize the dedication and expertise of our physicians, residents, and fellows. The Medical Staff Executive Committee honors two exceptional clinicians each year for their contributions to patient care, education, and leadership.
Join us in congratulating Dr. Ali Farkhondehpour, 2025 Physician of the Year, and Dr. Katherin Pope, 2025 House Officer of the Year.
Attending Physician of the Year
Dr. Ali Farkhondehpour, an esteemed hospitalist at UC San Diego Health, is recognized as the 2025 Physician of the Year for his exceptional patient care, dedication to medical education, and leadership in hospital medicine.
Dr. Farkhondehpour serves as associate program director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, guiding the next generation of physicians. His expertise in point-of-care ultrasound, quality improvement, and clinical education has led to institutional advancements, including creating the Hospital Medicine Pathway to better prepare residents for careers in hospital medicine.
Beyond his clinical excellence, Dr. Farkhondehpour is a mentor who elevates trainees with compassion, clear guidance, and a commitment to lifelong learning. His ability to translate complex medical knowledge into practical, real-world applications has earned him recognition from colleagues and students. A two-time San Diego "Top Doc" and president of the Society of Hospital Medicine San Diego Chapter, he is a leader shaping the future of hospital medicine. "Dr. Farkhondehpour is an outstanding physician and teacher," said a former resident. "He leads by example—bringing deep medical knowledge, patience, and a genuine passion for education. He challenges you to think critically while also creating a supportive learning environment. Working with him has made me a better doctor."

House Officer of the Year
Dr. Katherin Pope, an anesthesiology resident, is recognized as the 2025 House Officer of the Year for her exceptional patient care, leadership, and commitment to medical education. Known for her energetic presence and sharp clinical acumen, she is a role model in the operating room, earning the trust of patients, colleagues, and mentors alike.
Dr. Pope fosters a collaborative learning environment and is dedicated to enhancing resident education across UC San Diego Health’s clinical sites. She also serves as the resident wellness representative, advocating for physician well-being and creating a supportive training environment.
Dr. Pope’s commitment to patient-centered care is evident in her ability to build trust in the moments before surgery. "She meets patients where they are and creates an instant bond," shared a colleague. "In critical situations, she remains steady and communicates effectively, ensuring seamless teamwork in the OR."
With a passion for mentorship and a deep dedication to her craft, Dr. Pope exemplifies the future of anesthesiology—one rooted in skill, compassion, and leadership.
