Welcome to the Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology at the Shiley Eye Institute, UC San Diego. Our world-class clinicians, surgeons, and scientists are dedicated to excellence in educating and training the next generation of leaders in ophthalmology. We offer ophthalmology residency and subspecialty post-doctoral fellowship programs, as well as elective rotations for medical students.

The Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology was named after communications pioneer Andrew J. Viterbi, PhD donated $50 million in 2018. Inspired by his father Dr. Achille Viterbi, an ophthalmologist, he is honoring his father's memory by creating a lasting legacy at UC San Diego. His generous support is dedicated to advancing research, education, and eye care.

The ophthalmology educational training takes place at the UC San Diego Health Shiley Eye Institute and Hillcrest Medical Center as well as the Veterans Administration San Diego Health Care System. See below for more information.
