Inclusive Excellence
in Graduate Medical Education

A Committment to Inclusive Excellence

The University of California describes diversity as "the variety of personal experiences, values, and worldviews that arise from differences of culture and circumstance."

Graduate Medical Education (GME) at UC San Diego is committed to fostering an welcoming environment. We believe that varied perspectives enrich the educational experience of all trainees and offers unique benefits to our patients and their communities.

Initiatives Across GME

EDI Committee Outreach

We have an active GME EDI committee with the goal of enhancing networking among all trainees and faculty across all UC San Diego training programs. The GME EDI committee also sponsors open houses for all applicants to UC San Diego residency and fellowship programs and connects with students at national meetings before they apply. We look forward to meeting students in person even prior to the residency application season.

Multicultural Community

San Diego and the surrounding area that UC San Diego serves is incredibly diverse. Data from the 2020 census shows San Diego as the eight most populous city in the U.S. and with minority communities making up the majority of residents. More than 80 different languages are spoken in San Diego, which includes large immigrant communities from over 160 countries.

Residents and fellows have the opportunity to participate in outreach to San Diego middle school and high school students interested in careers in health care. There are also opportunities for local mentorship of undergraduate and medical students through UC San Diego School of Medicine programs and student affinity groups such as SNMA, LMSA, LGBTQPham and APAMSA.

LGBTQIA+ Community

The group hosts regular meetups for LGBTQIA+ health care providers and allies including medical students, residents, fellows and faculty across ALL specialties. The group aim to create a safe space for UC San Diego Health’s LGBTQIA+ community to socialize together and form connections.
