Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in GME

Please see our UC San Diego GME welcome video below, and read on about GME outreach, our community, and additional resources at UC San Diego.

The University of California Diversity Statement describes diversity as “the variety of personal experiences, values, and worldviews that arise from differences of culture and circumstance. Such differences include race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, language, abilities/disabilities, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, and geographic region, and more."

The UC San Diego Office of Graduate Medical Education is committed to the recruitment and retention of residents and fellows from diverse backgrounds, including those traditionally underrepresented in medicine. We believe that this diversity enriches the educational experience of all trainees and offers unique benefits to our patients and their communities.

We have an active GME presence in educating Program Directors and other faculty on many topics including holistic review of trainee applications, support and retention, and understanding implicit bias in both training and recruitment. Our largest GME training program, Internal Medicine, hosts frequent UCSD-wide Grand Rounds from experts in various aspects of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). Many other departments/divisions have grand rounds, journal clubs and teaching activities related to Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion. The following links include some of many examples: Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Internal Medicine, Ophthalmology, Pediatrics, Plastic Surgery, Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine, and Radiology

GME OUTREACH

We have an active GME EDI committee with the goal of enhancing networking among diverse trainees and faculty across all UCSD training programs. The GME EDI committee also sponsors Justice, Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion open houses for applicants to UCSD residency and fellowship programs. Presence at national meetings of medical students from diverse backgrounds is also a priority, we look forward to meeting students in person even prior to the residency application season.

UC San Diego welcomes students from diverse backgrounds to apply for away clerkships. The following Departments offer scholarships for eligible students applying to rotations in their respective department: Emergency Medicine, Internal MedicinePediatrics, and Radiation Medicine & Applied Sciences. If you do not see the program you're interested in, please check the departmental website and the UC San Diego Visiting Senior Students Page.

MULTICULTURAL COMMUNITY

San Diego and the surrounding area that UC San Diego serves is incredibly diverse. Data from the 2020 census shows San Diego as the 8th most populous city in the U.S. and with minority communities making up the majority of residents. More than 80 different languages are spoken in San Diego, which includes large immigrant communities from over 160 countries.

Residents and fellows have the opportunity to participate in outreach to San Diego middle school and high school students interested in careers in healthcare. There are also opportunities for local mentorship of undergraduate and medical students though UCSD programs as well as SNMA, LMSA, LGBTQPham and APAMSA.
