UC San Diego Health Sciences Faculty Leadership Skills Training Opportunities

Faculty leadership training promotes an engaged, diverse and inclusive faculty in academic medicine. UC San Diego Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences (VCHS) and the Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) supports funding for faculty development programs at UC San Diego and high quality nationally recognized programs.

Eligibility and Funding Support for Leadership Skills Training Opportunities

Health Sciences (HS) faculty at all ranks and series with at least a 50% salaried appointment are eligible to apply.  

Applications for HS funding support are accepted on a rolling basis and must include a description of the applicant's current and potential leadership roles in UC San Diego Health Sciences, CV and letter of endorsement from the sponsoring Department. Note that Departments are expected to cover a portion of the training and/or travel expenses and the endorsement letter must confirm this support.

Specific application instructions are indicated below for each selected training opportunity.

A committee comprised of Health Sciences senior faculty leadership will review and select recipients for HS funding support.

UC San Diego Leadership Skills Training Opportunities

Leadership training opportunities for Health Sciences (HS) faculty within UC San Diego are outlined below with additional information including available funding support. 

UC San Diego Rady School of Management Executive MBA

Target AudienceMid- and Senior-career faculty 
Funding spots availableUp to two faculty members selected annually
Estimated Cost$100,000 total
Support Structure

1/3 faculty, 1/3 Department and 1/3 Dean, CEO or VCHS, for a maximum of 2/3 institutional support. If the applicant has already secured institutional support for 2/3 of training expenses, the applicant is ineligible to apply for additional HS funding.

Time Commitment2 years (FlexMBA)
Application DueRolling basis, Rady MBA deadlines are Dec 1, Feb 1, Apr 1, June 1 and July 15
Additional requirements

Applicants need to apply simultaneously to the Rady MBA program and UC San Diego HS Leadership Skills Training Support. Applications for funding must be received before acceptance and enrollment into the Rady MBA program. Funding decisions will be made after and is contingent on acceptance into the Rady MBA program.

Mid- and Senior-Faculty must have a salaried faculty appointment for at least 2 years before the start of training to be eligible for funding support. The faculty member must remain at UC San Diego for at least 2 years after completion of the program or required to pay back the funding to the institution.

National Leadership Training Opportunities

Health Sciences funding is also available for selected high quality national leadership training opportunities external to UC San Diego offerings. Those opportunities are outlined below with additional information including available funding support. Note that Department support for travel expenses is required for the applicant to be eligible for HS funding.

AAMC Leadership Development Seminars

Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM)

Target AudienceMid- and Senior-career women faculty 
Funding spots availableOne faculty supported annually
Estimated Cost$24,000 ($14,600 registration + travel, lodging, meals)
Support Structure 1/3 faculty, 1/3 Department and 1/3 Dean, CEO or VCHS, for a maximum of 2/3 institutional support. If the applicant has already secured institutional support for 2/3 of training expenses, the applicant is ineligible to apply for additional HS funding.
Time Commitment1 year fellowship (including three onsite 1-week sessions)
Application Due2020-2021 applications open online on November 1, 2019 and due January 31, 2020
Additional requirements

Applicants must be nominated by the Dean or CEO of the Health System for ELAM and first apply to ELAM. After acceptance into ELAM, faculty may submit a UCSD HS Faculty Leadership Skills Training Funding Application.

Mid- and Senior-Faculty hired at UC San Diego at least 2 years before the start of training are eligible to apply for HS funding support. Support for this training will require that the faculty member remain at UC San Diego for at least 2 years after completion of leadership training or forfeit funding, requiring payback to the institution.
