Recall to Active Duty (RTAD) and Emeritus Faculty

Recall to Active Duty

When a faculty or academic member decides to retire, he or she should be encouraged to meet with the Benefits Office on Campus to obtain information and complete necessary paperwork. A letter of notification of retirement from the member is required and should be sent to the SOM Academic Affairs Office. This action is entered in PPS.

Professor Emeritus is an honorary title conferred for certain faculty and academic appointees upon retirement. The APM specifies criteria and procedures for conferring the title of Professor Emeritus on Academic Senate and Non-Academic Senate faculty. When the emeritus title is conferred for Senate members, the action should be entered into PPS using title code 932.

  • Academic Senate – emeritus title is automatic upon retirement.
  • Non Academic Senate – on request by Department. See SOM Policy for Non-Academic Emeritus Titles.
