UC San Diego Surgeons Present at ACS Clinical Congress, Host International Scholars

The 2017 Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons (ACS)—the premier annual surgical meeting in the world—convened in San Diego October 22-26. The ACS is a scientific and educational association of surgeons dedicated to improving the quality of care for the surgical patient by setting high standards for surgical education and practice. 

Many surgeon-scientists in UC San Diego's Department of Surgery presented, moderated or otherwise participated in the Clinical Congress. To learn more, visit our Events page.

The Department was also pleased to host several international visiting scholars—providing them with continuing medical education opportunities and increasing the international visibility of our department and medical center. Among the international visiting scholars:

Dr. Guixi Zhang, University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital, was awarded the 2017 International Guest Scholar of the American College of Surgeons to visit UC San Diego under the mentorship of Dr. Raul Coimbra, chief of the Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns and Acute Care Surgery

Dr. Kelvin Ng, University of Hong Kong, was awarded the 2017 Pellegrini ACS International Scholar award to visit UC San Diego under the mentorship of Dr. Jason Sicklick, a surgical oncologist who specializes in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). Dr. Ng also visited the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus under Dr. Richard D. Schulick's mentorship prior to traveling to San Diego.

Dr. Jane Mills from Australia was awarded the Hugh Johnson ANZ Chapter ACS Travelling Fellowship for 2017, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Dr. Mills visited UC San Diego under the mentorship of surgical oncologists Drs. Anne Wallace and Michael Bouvet.

sulpice.jpegDr. Robert Caiazzo, Lille University Hospital, France; Dr. Sylvana Perretta, the University of Strausberg, France; and Dr. Laurent Sulpice from the University Hospital Rennes, France, were selected to participate in the 2017 American Surgical Association – French Academy of Surgery Exchange Program. They visited UC San Diego under the mentorship of Dr. Bryan Clary, chair of the Department of Surgery.  The French Academy also visited UCLA and City of Hope, and French Academy surgeons presented lectures at the Clinical Congress on October 26.
