The University of California Board of Regents has approved construction plans for Phase 1 of a multi-phase project to reimagine our Hillcrest Medical Center. Phase 1 includes the construction of a new parking structure and 250,000-square-foot outpatient pavilion with specialty clinical programs, such as oncology, cardiology, neurosurgery and orthopedics, as well as ambulatory surgery operating rooms, gastroenterology procedure rooms, advanced imaging, infusion and radiation oncology.
This transformation of the Hillcrest campus is part of the 2019 Long-Range Development Plan that will provide new facilities, new technology, increased capacity, expanded care offerings and other community services and amenities. The project is also necessary to comply with seismic safety provisions of the California Hospital Code and provides an opportunity to design and build modern, sustainable and efficient medical facilities that will create a more resilient campus better incorporated within the community. This work will help ensure our mission to drive innovation and deliver world-class medical care, research and education for many decades to come.
The new hospital is the cornerstone of a redevelopment project that will also feature up to 1,000 units of workforce housing, a new parking structure, and a wellness center.
Construction on the outpatient pavilion, parking structure and related infrastructure improvements is expected to start in November 2021. Over the next 15 years, construction will continue on the Hillcrest Medical Campus in five major phases. These phases were created to reduce impact on the surrounding community while ensuring current, critical campus functions remain operational.
Already a premier destination for patients in our region, the Hillcrest site will deeply expand its capabilities to care for the community, elevating the already exceptional care and medical education UC San Diego provides to the region.
This project is part of UC San Diego’s ongoing physical, intellectual and cultural transformation to reach its goal of becoming a premier destination for students, patients and the community.
