Transitioning from Residency into Surgical Practice (TRiS)

Transitioning from Residency into Surgical Practice (TRiS) is a novel curriculum developed for all surgical trainees to examine the socioeconomic aspects of surgery and all domains of quality healthcare. This course is designed to educate surgeons on health care systems and policy, healthcare economics, managing an effective surgical practice, medicolegal principles, and ensuring quality and patient safety. Over a series of seminars and workshops, a hands-on approach is used to teach tangible knowledge and skills that are not often gained through clinical training.

Graduates from UC San Diego surgical residency and fellowship programs are equipped with the tools necessary to transition from training into an efficient and successful clinical practice, in academia or in the community. This rare and unique curriculum is shared across the Departments of Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, and Urology highlighting the inter-departmental collegiality of our institution.

Course topics include but are not limited to:

  • Employment Settings and Opportunities
