The Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Division provides the highest quality, comprehensive patient care and professional education. The hub of our patient care, training, and clinical research is the state-of-the-art Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center. When it opened in 2011, it became the only facility in San Diego providing all cardiovascular research, services, and programs in one location.

Innovations in Endovascular Aneurysm Repair

Rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysms

Rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) is the 10th leading cause of death for men in the United States. Huge advances have been made in minimally invasive approaches to AAA repair, but more is needed to make endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) more durable. Researchers at UC San Diego are kick starting two new clinical trials that will explore the efficacy of a polymer-based sealing device; and, with the School of Engineering, are exploring how flow modeling could lead to personalized aneurysm sac management.

Q&A with New Division Chief, Mahmoud Malas

Dr. Mahmoud Malas began as Chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery in September 2018. One of the most active clinical trialists in the country in the field of vascular surgery—a field where the development and implementation of new technology is rapidly occurring—Dr. Malas will bring to UC San Diego 13 years of experience from the Johns Hopkins Medical School, where he directs the Center for Research Excellence and Surgical Trials. In this Q&A, Dr. Malas shares his hopes for the Division, as well as his thoughts on destiny and the path that led him to a career in vascular surgery.
