Acute Care Surgery Fellowship Program

UC San Diego Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns and Acute Care Surgery offers a two-year AAST-approved fellowship in Acute Care Surgery.

This two-year program offers fellows broad training in elective and emergency general surgery, as well as trauma surgery and certain surgical subspecialties. It provides a non-ACGME accredited second year of training in addition to the ACGME accredited Surgical Critical Care fellowship currently offered by the trauma division. The fellowship is overseen by full-time trauma/critical care surgeons, who have extensive clinical and research interests.

Fellows spend approximately 6 months on the Emergency General Surgery service functioning as a junior attending, in addition to rotations on vascular, hepatobiliary, and thoracic surgery. Electives are available in trauma, pediatric trauma, orthopedic surgery, burn surgery and neurosurgery. Additional electives are available, including international electives, tailored to suit the particular interests and training needs of the fellow.

Research is strongly encouraged, with numerous opportunities to participate in both clinical and basic science projects.

Further details regarding the acute care surgery fellowship model can be found on the AAST website.
