The Craniofacial and Pediatric Plastic Surgery Fellowship is a one-year clinical program designed to provide a broad, but highly specialized experience. Based out of Rady Children's Hospital, the fellow is exposed to all facets of craniofacial and maxillofacial surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, generics/dysmorphology, pediatric dermatology, and oculoplastic surgery. Extensive hands-on experiences provide the fellow with a surgical approach to the most complex craniofacial and congenital malformations.
The fellow is exposed in an in-depth fashion to cleft care, craniosynostosis management, vascular anomalies, craniofacial trauma, dentofacial deformities, airway obstruction, hemangiomas, ear reconstruction, vascular malformations, facial nerve disorders, and virtually all aspects of pediatric plastic surgery. Innovative surgical approaches in cleft care, endoscopic-assisted craniosynostosis surgery and distraction osteogenesis with internal and external devices are important components of the program.
Clinical research is encouraged, and the fellow is able to participate in ongoing projects in craniosynostosis, cleft care, patient reported outcome measures, telemedicine, international health, and the biologic and genetic basis of craniofacial disorders. The fellow attends all pediatric plastic surgery and craniofacial clinics, the cleft and craniofacial team meetings, the vascular lesions team clinic, and didactic sessions on related topics. The fellow provides emergency call and hospital call for pediatric plastic surgery patients. The fellow is involved in teaching and provides information and training to the UC San Diego Plastic Surgery residents. A unique aspect of the fellowship is participation in international humanitarian outreach through
ConnectMed International, as well as direct involvement with the
Fresh Start Surgical Gifts programs, a charity program providing free care to children in the U.S. and abroad who have no funding. The Fresh Start Surgical Clinic houses the Center for Craniofacial Disorders along with Plastic Surgery, Genetics and Dysmorphology, as well as the Fresh Start Surgical Gifts charity. The Center was established at Rady Children's Hospital and is a brand new state-of-the-art facility providing an outstanding infrastructure for our patients and staff.
