Team HIPEC: Expanding Use of Heated Intraperitoneal Chemoperfusion

Patients with peritoneal metastasis have an uncertain, but often grim, prognosis, but heated intraperitoneal chemoperfusion—or HIPEC—offers hope for some. This story explores the genesis of UC San Diego's HIPEC program, profiles the Surgery Department's HIPEC "A-team," and highlights new research, including a clinical trial of laparoscopic HIPEC, and genetic studies to understand the molecular basis of cancers that spread to the peritoneal surfaces, among others.
