When you walk into the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in La Jolla, it is immediately clear that the hospital is different. Unlike the hospitals across Interstate 5, it has no vaulted ceilings, or plush leather couches; no expensive paintings and sculptures. The only adornment is a grand piano set on the ground floor that plays old time jazz tunes amidst the bustle of patients, staff, and families.
Center for the Future of Surgery, situated in the Medical Education and Telemedicine Building in La Jolla, offers medical simulation training. It is dedicated to educating surgeons and testing new operating room equipment, procedures and techniques. Under the leadership of Santiago Horgan, MD, Division Chief for Minimally Invasive Surgery, the Center strives to continually improve and expand surgery options using emerging technology so that patients experience less pain and achieve better outcomes.
