Patients with peritoneal metastasis have an uncertain, but often grim, prognosis, but heated intraperitoneal chemoperfusion—or HIPEC—offers hope for some. This story explores the genesis of UC San Diego's HIPEC program, profiles the Surgery Department's HIPEC "A-team," and highlights new research, including a clinical trial of laparoscopic HIPEC, and genetic studies to understand the molecular basis of cancers that spread to the peritoneal surfaces, among others.
The Center for the Future of Surgery, situated in the Medical Education and Telemedicine Building in La Jolla, offers medical simulation training. It is dedicated to educating surgeons and testing new operating room equipment, procedures and techniques. Under the leadership of Santiago Horgan, MD, Division Chief for Minimally Invasive Surgery, the Center strives to continually improve and expand surgery options using emerging technology so that patients experience less pain and achieve better outcomes.
