Classroom Pivotal Response Teaching (CPRT) is a naturalistic, behavioral intervention for children with autism. It is a classroom modification of Pivotal Response Training (PRT), designed specifically to meet the additional demands that special education teachers face in public and private school classrooms. Based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), CPRT specifies eight teacher behaviors designed to get and maintain a high level of student motivation, as well as maintain and generalize student skills across a variety of settings and people.
We have completed training and data collection for the Classroom Pivotal Response Teaching (CPRT) effectiveness trial. A total of 92 teachers across 17 school districts were trained over three years. In total, 308 students participated in this study. Data collected includes observational, survey, and standardized measures for both teachers and students.
Based on preliminary analysis of data from the CPRT effectiveness trial:
- 73% of 92 completing training met coach-rated fidelity.
- More positive attitudes towards evidence-based practices (EBPs) are associated with significantly higher training engagement and sustained use of PRT.
- Higher leadership support is associated with positive attitudes toward EBPs and higher fidelity.
Building upon these data, this new study aims to explore the role of provider attitudes and implementation leadership on teacher implementation of CPRT, and ultimately their effects on student outcomes. We will soon be recruiting for this new study which involves training in CPRT and randomization into one of two leadership intervention conditions.
