Ann Garland is Professor and Chair of the Department of School, Family, and Mental Health Professions at USD. Her research is designed to improve mental health care for children and families by translating science into community practice. Over the past two decades, her projects have addressed: access to mental health care among at-risk populations, racial and ethnic disparities in care, methods to measure the delivery and outcomes of care, and identifying common elements of evidence-based practice. She has developed strong collaborative partnerships community stakeholders and she is very active in training researchers and clinicians from multiple disciplines.
Dr. Garland’s research has always focused on understanding and improving community-based “usual care” mental health services for children and families. She has conducted clinical epidemiological studies to identify the need for mental health care and factors influencing use of services, including multiple studies of racial/ethnic disparities in care. In addition, she has led studies examining challenges and opportunities in outcome measurement in community-based care, including research on multiple stakeholders’ conflicting perceptions of clinical outcomes. Dr. Garland also led one of the first large studies which characterized community-based out-patient care for children with disruptive behavior problems, identifying consistencies and inconsistencies with elements of evidence-based practice and identifying a relationship between delivery of care consistent with evidence-based practice and improved outcomes. She has worked collaboratively to examine strengths and weaknesses of different methods of measuring fidelity to evidence-based practices and to explore innovative methods to assess practice processes. Finally, Dr. Garland has conducted research on clinical supervision methods and continues to pursue research on training methods.
Administrative and Clinical Focus
As Department Chair in a graduate program training Counselors and Marital and Family Therapists, Dr. Garland is committed to mental health workforce development. She continues to implemented curriculum changes to emphasize evidence-based practice training, supervision, and consultation across disciplines. She is active in research mentorship for Early Career Scientists and is also active in clinical teaching and supervision.
