Dr. Laura A. Berner, a postdoctoral fellow at the UCSD Eating Disorders Center for Treatment and Research, recently received a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award for Postdoctoral Fellows from the National Institute of Mental Health. The three-year fellowship, co-sponsored by Drs. Walter Kaye and Alan Simmons, focuses on the neural systems mediating self-regulatory control processes in bulimia nervosa. Her research project, also supported by a grant from Hilda and Preston Davis Foundation, is the first to investigate brain activation and performance associated with multiple forms of self-regulation in this population. Her results could inform novel treatments for eating disorders characterized by behavioral and emotional dyscontrol.
