PGY4 Clinical Rotations

  • General outpatient psychiatry clinic for TAY population and adults at South Bay Guidance Center (SBGC). SBGC is a county mental health clinic serving SMI patients. All patients are paired with a clinician for psychotherapy and I am one of the psychiatric providers who can do medication management. I have one therapy case as well.
  • Medication Assisted Treament (MAT) concentrated mental health clinic at Family Health Centers in Hillcrest (FQHC clinic). I work with Dr. Sepulveda, an addiction psychiatrist and am getting more experience with suboxone inductions as well as managing all other substance use disorders. In San Diego, we treat patients from all diverse backgrounds struggling with opioid use disorder, alcohol use disorder, and methamphetamine use disorder.
  • I am also doing general Outpatient psychiatry at Family Health Centers in Hillcrest providing psychiatric evaluations and medication management follow ups.
  • UCSD Selective: UCSD College Mental Health psychiatry clinic in La Jolla where current undergraduate, graduate and medical students are seen for psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and therapy
  • UCSD Selective: Addiction Recovery and Treatment clinic with addiction psychiatrist, Dr. Marienfeld. Outpatient clinic for treatment of substance use disorders.

Background & Education

I grew up in Brea, CA which is a small city in North Orange County, roughly 2 hours north of San Diego. I come from a large, Mexican family who (pre-COVID) gets together often for events and gatherings, so it has been truly amazing to be close enough to drive home on free weekends to attend events when possible. I attended UC San Diego for undergrad, completed 1 year at UCSF for a Post-Baccalaureate Program, took 2 years off while working as a clinical research assistant, and I attended UC San Diego for medical school. I'm a "UCSD Lifer."

Career goals/interests within psychiatry

My passion is in public psychiatry and addictions as well as health equity and access to mental health care. I'm very fortunate to have had the opportunity the last three years to gain experience working with public-insured patients in the outpatient setting strengthening both my psychopharmacology and psychotherapy skills. I've been fortunate to have been paired with amazing therapy supervisors as well as mentors through the community psychiatry track.  In my last year of residency, I'm looking forward to helping patients with medication assisted treatment (MAT) services for substance use disorders at Family Health Centers, a local FQHC, and at UCSD with Dr. Marienfeld.

Typical Week

SUNDAY

Relax, laundry, tidy up, and get ready for the week.

MONDAY

Morning
6:30am- virtual group work out with friends via Zoom. This is something that a few of my friends started up after COVID to motivate one another to stay accountable. I made myself a very amateur home gym with minimal equipment! I’m all set with my TRX band, resistance bands, yoga mat, and gallon of water for some weight.
Afternoon
SBGC for general psychiatry clinic.
Evening
One Monday per month, I volunteer a couple hours to precept UCSD medical students at the Student Run Free Clinic-Downtown site for their Psychiatry Clinic. Appointments are typically in person, but have transitioned to zoom for the time being. There have been anywhere from 2-3 residents involved each month. Make dinner, check my schedule to chart review tomorrow’s patients, and then relax before bed.
