About UC San Diego Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program

Creating the Next Generation of Leaders

UC San Diego has a long tradition of cutting-edge and innovative research in substance use and addiction. With the introduction of the UC San Diego Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship in 2020, we add a clinical fellowship training experience to utilize the outstanding faculty and educational opportunities to create the next generation of clinical leaders in addiction psychiatry.

Providing Advanced Training

The Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program provides one year of advanced (PGY-5 and beyond) clinical training in the evaluation, treatment, research, and teaching of substance use disorders. Fellows will be provided with training in the skills, judgment, and knowledge necessary to practice Addiction Psychiatry. At the end of the training year, the addiction psychiatry fellow should be well prepared to sit for the specialty board examination and function independently as an addiction psychiatrist and at the consultant level.

ACGME Accredited

The fellowship is composed of a primary placement with continuity clinics, community partner continuity clinics, and a rotation of secondary placements in order to fulfill all the ACGME requirements and broaden the clinical and population exposures. Addiction fellows rotate in the UC San Diego Substance Treatment and Recovery (STAR) Program and the Veteran's Administration (VA) Substance Abuse Rehabilitation and Recovery Treatment Program (SARRTP), the VA Alcohol and Drug Treatment Program (ADTP). Other rotations include the UC San Diego Medical Toxicology rotation. Fellows will receive individualized supervision and will participate in addiction seminars and in multi-disciplinary clinical rotation conferences. Clinical research and scholarly project experiences are encouraged.
