Welcome to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Department of Psychiatry. We are a diverse community of faculty, staff, and trainees dedicated to an important mission:

“To enhance mental wellness and better the lives of people with mental illness across the lifespan through basic, clinical, and translational research; by educating the next generation of scientists and clinicians; and by providing state of the art, evidence based personalized and compassionate care, in partnership with our community.”

Our Department benefits from being part of one of the most highly regarded public universities in the country – the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Beyond the powerful infrastructure of talent and resources available to us through UCSD, we benefit from an incomparable nexus of outstanding clinician scientists dedicated to biomedical research in the San Diego community, as well as from strong collaborations with the VA San Diego Healthcare System, Rady Children’s Hospital, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Scripps Research Institute and various agencies of San Diego County (Health and Human Services Agency) and California state government (Division of Health Services and Department of Corrections).

The research of the Department is multidisciplinary and translational. It ranges from basic studies on the genetics and molecular mechanisms underlying neuropsychiatric disorders to clinical research on best practices in treatment, including innovative uses of cognitive behavioral therapy, telemedicine and novel pharmacological and psychotherapeutics. You can acquaint yourself with the research of the Department by clicking Research Council, which includes the links to research centers and programs, and to the websites of individual investigators.

Our educational programs are similarly broad and multidisciplinary. They focus on educating trainees including undergraduates, medical students, doctoral students in psychology, neuroscience and pharmacology, as well as those from various graduate and postdoctoral programs. We have an outstanding Adult Psychiatry Residency-Training, Combined Psychiatry / Family Medicine Residency, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry as well as Geriatric Psychiatry Clinical Fellowship and The Psychosomatic Medicine Fellowship programs. Our San Diego State University/University of California, San Diego (SDSU/UCSD) Joint Doctoral Program (JDP) in clinical psychology, is regularly rated as one of the best in the country, with graduates who have become leaders in their fields. We also have many specialized training programs, some of which are supported by the National Institutes of Health, such as our UCSD Research Fellowship in Biological Psychiatry & Neuroscience, Geriatric Psychiatry Research Fellowship, Research Residency Program, training programs in HIV/AIDS (Training in Research on Addictions in Interdisciplinary NeuroAIDS (TRAIN), Interdisciplinary Research Fellowship in NeuroAIDS (IRFN)) and many others listed under our Psychiatry Education & Training (PET) Council.

Our clinical programs span continuity of care from acute and emergency treatment, in-patient hospitalization, partial and intensive outpatient programs to general outpatient services, and various specialized services (e.g., for Eating Disorders, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Treatment Resistant Depression, Early Onset Psychosis, Geriatrics, Maternal Mental Health, PTSD, Chronic Pain and Tele-Psychiatry). By going to our Clinical Council page you will be able to access descriptions and contact information for these programs.

Community involvement and collaboration is a core feature of our Department as part of a public university. Our partnership with the VA San Diego Healthcare System, Rady Children’s Hospital, the San Diego Psychoanalytic Center, the San Diego Psychiatric Society, the Saint Vincent de Paul Village, TCMP and San Diego County Behavioral Health Services Division and California state programs (California State Department of Corrections) are examples of these partnerships. We also partner with the US Navy to provide training for their psychiatrists and psychologists and have collaborative training relationships with local universities such as San Diego State University, University of San Diego, and the University of Southern California.

Our Department also has a long-standing and continued commitment to diversity and inclusion in our research, educational, and clinical activities. To learn more about the Department’s activities in this regard, click on the link for the Chair’s Advisory Committee on Diversity Issues.

I hope you will enjoy looking through the many research, educational, clinical, and community components of our Department. Thank you for your interest. If you wish to contact the Department, please email me at You may also tweet me on @psychchairucsd.

Peace and Good Health
