The Pharmacology Department at the UCSD School of Medicine offers an 8-week research training program to undergraduates after their sophomore and junior years.

Summer fellows receive hands-on training in research laboratories lead by world-class faculty along with their postdoctoral fellows and graduate students who provide mentoring through a variety of ongoing research projects. Summer fellows also participate in weekly professional development workshops and will experience the rigors and challenges of doing research at a top-rated research institution by engaging in 6-8 hours of laboratory research per day.

This program is specifically designed for students who are interested in a career in basic research and who are seriously considering Ph.D. training in the basic biomedical sciences. This program is not designed for pre-M.D. or pre-Pharm.D. students.

Approximately five to seven students are accepted into the SURF Program from a nationwide pool of applicants.

SURF students are awarded:

  • A stipend of $3000

  • On-campus housing

  • Travel Allowance

  • Outstanding Research Opportunity (List of potential faculty lab/mentors)

  • GRE Preparation Course

  • Professional Development Workshops

  • Opportunity to present research at the UCSD Summer Undergraduate Research Conference
