Focusing on Aicardi-Goutières Syndrome, the lab used induced pluripotent stem cells and created organoid models to study the role of the TREX1 protein and LINE1 element in the disease. Through this, they gained a better understanding of the disease and discovered possible therapeutic treatments.

Dr. Alysson Muotri is interviewed about his experience turning human embryonic stem cells in both normal and autistic neurons. By doing this, he is able to identify the mutations in the genome that cause the disease without other environmental factors and see them in early stages of development.
