About the Haddad Lab
The major thrust in our laboratory is to decipher the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the response, adaptation, or injury during and following O2 deprivation. For the past 20 years, we have defined and characterized the cellular and molecular alterations that can lead to survival of cells or to injury and cell death.
Long-term Hypoxia in Flies Shown to Result in Permanent DNA Changes
In an important study that may shed light on human ability to adapt to hypoxia, or inadequate levels of oxygen, Drs. Dan Zhou, Kelly Frazer, and Gabriel G. Haddad et al. have proven that the genome of flies exposed to long-term hypoxia are changed to permanently affect gene expression. Their findings were published by the journal of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) on January 24, 2011.
La Jolla, June 29th, 2010 - Dr. Gabriel G. Haddad, Chair, Department of Pediatrics, UC San Diego, and Physician-in-Chief, Rady Children’s Hospital, has been awarded a $10 million Program Project Grant from the NIH (Heart, Lung and Blood Institute).
Dr. Gabriel G. Haddad, a world-renowned leader in respiratory research for more than 25 years, is the Chair of UCSD's Department of Pediatrics and Physician-in-Chief and Chief Scientific Officer at Rady Children's Hospital, San Diego.
