UCSD is a world leader in scientific and medical research ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the 15th best university in the world in 2016 for research, global and regional reputation, and international collaboration. UCSD is ranked 5th in the nation in total R&D expenditures by the National Science Foundation and 6th in the nation in total research output by the journal Nature. UCSD's total research funding has exceeded $1 Billion dollars for 4 of the last 6 years.
