To meet California's health workforce needs, the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine (UCSD SOM) teaches the biomedical sciences and develops the research skills of students so that they may become exemplary healthcare providers. With funding from the Health Resources Services Administration, UCSD SOM established the Hispanic Center of Excellence (HCOE), which provides training to young physicians who have talent and interest in the health professions, can compete for and retain positions in academic medicine, and have the knowledge and skills considered necessary to deliver culturally appropriate health services to all segments of the population.
