Patient Care
We provide evidence-based, compassionate care to a diverse patient population in San Diego County.
The Section of Newborn Medicine section is a family-centered, baby-friendly birthing environment which offers the highest standard of care to newborns and their families. Faculty lead all aspects of newborn care at the UCSD Health Jacobs Medical Center
The Academic General Pediatrics (AGP) section provides outpatient general pediatric care to infants, children and adolescents including well child checks, urgent and sick visits, elective circumcision of boys within 30 days of birth, travel visits, breastfeeding support, including for infants with complex medical needs, and care for children with complex medical needs as part of our UCSD AGP/Rady Children's Hospital Special Needs Clinic. These clinics are located in Kearny Mesa/Frost St. and La Jolla.
Faculty are also based at the UCSD AGP City Heights Clinic, affiliated with Family Health Centers of San Diego, where they provide evidence-bsaed care to immigrant communities.
Our Kearny Mesa/Frost St. AGP site also is co-located with our Section of Developmental Pediatrics (DBP). Our DBP faculty provide on-site consults for patients and our AGP and DBP practices share many patients allowing for cross-specialty collaboration.
Faculty also provide care for infants and children affected by HIV at the UCSD Health Owen Clinic.
The Developmental-Behavior Pediatrics Section faculty provide expert sub-specialty evaluation and treatment of infants, children, and adolescents with developmental, learning, and/or behavioral concerns. They are based at the Kearny Mesa/Frost St. site, provide expert DBP-contracted services at Rady Children's Hospital for their Down Syndrome, Turner Syndrome, and Kid START Clinics, and the San Diego Regional Center.

Academic General Pediatrics
The faculty and staff in the Section of Academic General Pediatrics are committed to providing evidence-based pediatric care while training the next generation of students and residents who will become pediatricians. We have pediatric teaching clinics at our Kearny Mesa/Frost St., La Jolla, and at our federally qualified health center/Academic General Pediatrics partnership with Family Health Centers of San Diego in City Heights. We provide care to a diverse group of patients from various geographic, racial/ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. We strive to give every child the highest-quality care and provide a welcoming and supportive environment to all families.
In addition to providing general pediatric care for newborns through young adults (0-21 years), we also provide the following specialized visits:
- Pediatric Travel Medicine
- A breastfeeding medicine clinic which offers post-discharge care of premature infants and for those with medically complex issues that affect breast feeding
- Breastfeeding/lactation support
- Prenatal consults for moms on chronic opioids
- The UCSD AGP/Rady Children's Hospital Special Needs Clinic : for children requiring complex medical care
- Elective circumcision of boys within 30 days of birth
- Telehealth visits
- Saturday morning clinics

Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics
The University of California San Diego Developmental-Behavioral Pediatric Clinic evaluates and treats infants, children, and adolescents with developmental, learning, or behavioral concerns. We have expertise in high-prevalence developmental disorders and behavioral problems and receive requests for consultation from primary care physicians, pediatric subspecialists, developmental service providers, mental health professionals, school professionals, and families. We include medical, developmental, behavioral, and social assessment in our evaluation to help families understand their child. When indicated, we assist in initiating or adjusting medication treatment plans. To support the child's optimal development and behavior, we direct families to resources to meet their child's needs.
Our services include evaluation, treatment, medication management, intervention, and coordination of care for the following conditions:
- Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- School and learning problems
- Autism spectrum disorders
- Developmental delays
- Aggression
- Discipline problems
- Attachment disorders
- Infant regulatory disorders (feeding, sleeping, elimination, affect)
- Genetic disorders, including prenatal drug and alcohol exposure
- Intellectual disabilities
Along with providing expert, evidence-based care, we have an active research and teaching program. Our team includes Developmental-Behavioral Pediatric fellows, pediatric residents, internal medicine-pediatric residents, child and adolescent psychiatry fellows, and medical students. Advocating on behalf of patients and families is also a top priority of our team.

Our faculty also provide clinical developmental-behavioral services at the Rady Children's Hospital Down Syndrome Clinic, KidSTART, the Autism Discovery Institute at Torrey Hills, the San Diego Regional Center, the San Ysidro Health Center, and Family Health Centers of San Diego.
Newborn Medicine
The Newborn Medicine team provides family-centered care for newborns rooming in with their parents on the Postpartum and Birth Center units at UC San Diego Health - Jacobs Medical Center. Working together with our obstetric care partners, nurses and ancillary staff, we have achieved high rates of exclusive breast feeding at discharge and have been recognized by the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative and United Nations Children's Fund as a "Baby-Friendly" birth facility.
Our team, consisting of general pediatricians and pediatric nurse practitioners, is dedicated to training the next generation of doctors in the appropriate management of well newborns. Residents and medical students from the UCSD School of Medicine learn about routine newborn care, breastfeeding, car seat safety, and a variety of newborn medical conditions.
The Newborn Medicine team promotes a family-centered, baby-friendly birthing environment which includes:
- Early and frequent skin-to-skin contact
- Breastfeeding starting within the first hour of life and on demand
- Delayed first bath to maintain a healthy microbiome
- Administration of Vitamin K, Erythromycin Eye Ointment and Hepatitis B vaccine while breastfeeding or skin-to-skin
- All routine care delivered at parent's bedside including hearing test, heelstick for California Newborn Screen and daily examinations
- Pasteurized donor human milk as nutritional option when maternal milk supply is less than infant's needs
