February 3, 2012, La Jolla, CA - Victor Nizet, MD, professor of pediatrics and pharmacy and Division Chief of Pediatric Pharmacology and Drug Discovery at UC San Diego School of Medicine and Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego, has been elected to Fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology.

“Academy Fellows are eminent leaders in the field of microbiology and are relied upon for authoritative advice and information on critical issues in microbiology,” says Dr. Bonnie Bassler, Chair of the Board of Governors at the American Academy of Microbiology.

The Academy recognizes excellence, originality, and creativity in the microbiological sciences, and Nizet’s election to this group is a mark of distinction, Bassler says.

Nizet is internationally recognized for career achievements in the field of bacterial pathogenesis and innate immunity, with a special focus on the leading bacterial infections of childhood, including Groups A and B Streptococcus and Staphylococcus aureus. The Nizet Laboratory at UC San Diego is currently focused on novel approaches to infectious disease therapy based on blocking bacterial virulence mechanisms or boosting the function of our immune cells and antibodies.

Founded in 1955, the American Academy of Microbiology is the oldest and largest life science organizations in the world, and functions as the honorific leadership group within the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). Today, the Academy serves a resource to governmental agencies, industry, ASM and the larger scientific and lay communities by convening colloquia to address critical issues in microbiology. Additionally, the mission of the Academy is to recognize scientists for outstanding contributions to microbiology and provide microbiological expertise in the service of science and the public.

Nizet will be recognized at the Academy Fellows Luncheon and Meeting at the 112th ASM General Meeting in San Francisco on Tuesday, June 19, 2012.
