George Liu received his Bachelor of Science at the California Institute of Technology and a PhD from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, where he worked with Professor David Wraith on mechanisms of T cell tolerance in Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis.  He subsequently obtained an M.D. from the University of California, San Diego and fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of California, San Diego where he studied S. aureus and GBS pathogenesis in the laboratory of Victor Nizet. In 2006, he moved to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and initiated a research program in host-pathogen interaction and novel therapeutics against antibiotic-resistant microbes. George Liu stayed at Cedars-Sinai from 2006 to 2019 and was recruited to UCSD in 2019 to assume the position of chief of infectious diseases in the department of pediatrics.  Prior to joining UCSD, George was in residence Professor of Pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine and co-Director of the Infectious and Immunologic Research Center. 

George Liu is the recipient of many accolades including predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships from HHMI, the Burroughs Wellcome Award for Biomedical Sciences, the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society Young Investigator Award, and the American Society for Microbiology Irving Siegal Award, Pfizer Aspire Award. In 2017, He was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation.
