Clinical Program: The Pediatric Infectious Diseases Division has established an outstanding clinical infectious diseases consultative service as well as an infectious diseases specialty service at RCHSD. Dr. Alice Pong and other members of the Division are responsible for the Hospital Epidemiology Program, as well as the RCHSD Antimicrobial Stewardship Program.

The Division of Infectious Diseases specializes in the management of serious, complicated or unusual infections in children. Expert care is provided by the infectious disease specialists of Rady Children's Specialists of San Diego.

The Division is also an integral part of the teaching program for the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, training the best and brightest medical students, pediatric residents and pediatric infectious diseases fellows. The Division’s clinical activity is primarily consultative assisting other medical and surgical divisions in the management of serious, complicated or unusual infections in children in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.

  • Specialized laboratory testing and interpretation of results

Kawasaki Disease Research Center

The Kawasaki Disease Research Center provides comprehensive services for infants and children with Acute and Convalescent Kawasaki Disease. The center is directed by Dr. Jane Burns, M.D.

Kawasaki Disease is an illness characterized by inflammation of blood vessels throughout the body. It is most often accompanied by the following symptoms: fever; rash; swelling of the hands and feet; irritation and reddening of the eyes; irritation and inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth, lips, and throat; and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. Kawasaki Disease affects children almost exclusively and most patients are under 6 years of age.

Hours of Operation

Kawasaki Clinics are held each Wednesday in the Cardiology Clinic. A Kawasaki Team Physician is available 24 hours a day for physician-to-physician consultations for suspected Acute Cases.
