UCSD Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute

The ACTRI is part of a national Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) consortium created to accelerate laboratory discoveries into treatments for patients. The CTSA program is led by the National Institutes of Health's National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS). Founded in 2010, the ACTRI now helps develop and manage nearly 200 clinical trials each year.

ACTRI Mission and Goals

Translational research involves moving knowledge and discovery gained from the basic sciences to its application in clinical and community settings. This concept is often summarized by the phrases "bench-to-bedside" and "bedside-to-community" research. The vision of the ACTRI is to translate scientific discoveries into improved health, and its mission is to provide resources, training and collaboration opportunities for UC San Diego scientists, health care providers and the community.

CHARM ⬌ ACTRI Collaborations

CHARM receives support and guidance from the ACTRI in the advancement of new diagnostic and therapeutic platforms for antibiotic-resistant pathogens to clinical application. ACTRI expertise in clinical trial coordination, regulatory issues and advance clinical laboratory and genomic technologies inform our best practices in getting patient (and microbial strain) information of the highest quality to positively impact patient outcomes in the most expeditious manner possible.

Energizing "Bench to Bedside"

ACTRI provides assistance with proposal development, study design, regulatory issues and submissions, biostatistics and informatics, and offers ethics consultation, clinical trial coordination, genomics technologies, biorepository services, facilitation with an affiliated laboratory network. ACTRI interactive functional areas include the Center for Clinical Research (CCR); Education, Training, and Career Development (ETCD); Biomedical Informatics (BMI); Community Engagement (CE); Translational Research Alliance (TRA); Translational Research Technology (TRT); and Evaluation.
