During the third-year pediatric clerkship or fourth-year pediatric sub-internship, medical students can elect to work with Developmental-Behavioral Pediatric subspecialists in the UCSD Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics Clinic. Medical students will be introduced to the evaluation and management of patients with delays in development, autism spectrum disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, anxiety/depression, learning problems, and behavioral concerns.
3rd Year Medical Students
As part of their third-year pediatric clerkship, medical students work with the UCSD Academic General Pediatrics clinic team to provide care to a diverse group of children ranging from newborns to young adults. Our goal is to introduce medical students to the practice of pediatrics with exposure to well child visits and acute visits covering a variety of complaints. In addition to learning from direct patient care, other educational components include daily small-group teaching seminars with faculty, noon didactic teaching, and a weekly journal club.
4th Year Medical Students
Fourth-year medical students may complete a month-long clinical elective at either of our clinical sites. Our goal is to provide the sub-intern with the opportunity to develop their confidence and independence while seeing a breadth of clinical cases. In addition to learning from direct patient care, other educational components include daily small-group teaching seminars and weekly journal clubs with faculty. Each student is expected to lead at least one of the journal clubs during their elective. They are also encouraged to develop either an online educational module or a community-based advocacy project in an area of interest during this rotation.
Fourth-year medical students from other institutions interested in rotating through our clinics can apply for a sub-intern elective.
