Lori Wan, MD


Lori Wan is a board certified internal medicine doctor and pediatrician. Dr. Wan provides primary care for adults, including preventive care and diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases. She is a Professor of Medicine for UC San Diego department of Pediatrics in the division of Academic General Pediatrics. Dr. Wan chose to become a primary care physician and pediatrician because she desires to bring the best care to her patients and their family members, from newborn to geriatric years.  In addition to seeing patients at UC San Diego Health, she cares for children at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. As a professor in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Wan is involved in training medical students and resident at UC San Diego School of Medicine.  She also serves as director of the Combined Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Program.  Dr. Wan feels that being involved in clinical academics is rewarding and challenging and allows her to be aware of the latest clinical advancements that can benefit her patients.  Dr. Wan has been honored and awarded throughout her career a few have been the San Diego’s Physicians of Exceptional Excellence,2006, 2012 and 2013 Top Doctors in Internal Medicine, Nominated for the Kaiser Teaching Award by UCSD First and Fourth Year Medical Students in 2011,2013. She has also received the UCSD Chief Medical Residents Teaching Award, Department of Medicine-June 2005, which is only awarded to four internal medicine faculty members each year.  Other awards have been UCSD Academy of Clinician Scholars Faculty Development Award, Phi Beta Kappa, Eta Chapter, UCLA and Mabel Wilson Richards Medical Scholarship.

  • Wan, L.  "First Annual UCSD Chief Resident Orientation."  ROLE: Co-organizer and lecturer. GOAL:  to discuss common challenges faced by chief residents in any training program and present ways to approach the distressed or disruptive resident. AUDIENCE: Future chief residents from training programs of all disciplines including internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, psychiatry,  radiology, neurosurgery as well as seasoned chief residents who were just finishing their year who helped facilitate the small group sessions. Feedback from the chief residents regarding this event was very favorable. 2012
  • Wan, L. "UCSD MED/PEDS Summative Program.  ROLE: Developer/presenter. GOAL: Evaluation Meeting to assess and critique the Med /Peds program ending in 2012.  This "state of the union" address provides a review of the several components of the residency program from accreditation to recruitment to resident feedback, which is valuable in improving the program and integrating both departments. 2012.
  • Wan, L. Milestones-Based Assessment Tools.  ROLE: Developed and implemented assessment tools to assess patient care competency using the internal medicine curricular milestones .  GOAL: Created direct observation assessment tools, specifically in the areas of geriatric medicine and musculoskeletal (knee and shoulder) exams, used by faculty to assess resident performance in terms of patient care competency using the "Next Accreditation System (NAS) Milestones" in the Internal Medicine Ambulatory Seminar Series. STATUS: Operational.  2012
  • Wan, L. Faculty Development Series Presentation: Next Accreditation System (NAS),    Milestones and Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA's)."  ROLE:  Organizer and lecturer. GOAL: Presentation to the the Division Chiefs of Pediatrics (or their representatives) to introduce and facilitate an understanding of the Milestones Project and the concept of EPA's in their future use in medical education.  AUDIENCE: Presented an interactive workshop on the "Next Accreditation System (NAS), Milestones and Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA's)" to Division Chiefs in the Department of  Pediatrics during ½ day faculty educational retreat and during a faculty development session to the Division of Academic General Pediatrics. 2012
  • Wan, L. Introduce the components of the Next Accreditation System.  ROLE: As Vice-Chair of the GMEC (Graduate Medical Education Committee), I collaborated with the Designated Institutional Office and other members of the GMEC Executive Committee.  GOAL: To introduce pertinent materials and expectations by the national accrediting body of the ACGME as all training programs are expected to follow the guidelines of the Next Accreditation System.  Phase 1 training residency programs transition into NAS in July 2013 and Phase 2 training programs transition into NAS in July 2014.  AUDIENCE: An all-training program director meeting; slides from presentation were posted on the UCSD GME Website for future reference.  2012
