The Department of General Academic Pediatrics expanded to two clinical sites in 2016. Faculty and staff are committed to our mission of providing excellent pediatric care while training the next generation of pediatricians. In addition to serving as the UCSD Pediatric Residency Program’s largest continuity clinic site, we also provide shadowing opportunities for a diverse group of trainees ranging from undergraduate students to dental residents. As part of our educational mission, faculty members regularly contribute to morning didactic teaching, weekly journal clubs, and the continuity clinic curriculum.

Our faculty have diverse clinical, research, and advocacy interests. In addition to providing general pediatric care, we provide specialized clinics for pediatric travel medicine, post-discharge care of premature infants, and children with special needs. The UCSD Adolescent Medicine Clinic based in Kearney Mesa provides specialty care for adolescents and young adults up to age twenty-six with complex physical and socioemotional needs. Clinic-wide research and quality-measure initiatives seek to improve our understanding of important pediatric questions such as screening practices for hyperlipidemia in children and identification and management of postpartum depression. Our department also engages with the surrounding community by partnering with programs such as Reach Out and Read and supporting many initiatives of the local chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Looking forward, we are excited by the many opportunities to continue serving the needs of children and families throughout San Diego.
