The Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine began in 1978 under the direction of Dr “Buzz” Kaufman, with primary focus on delivering excellent patient care and trainee education. Over the past decades the division has grown significantly and houses leaders in palliative care, complex and subacute care, homecare, and medical care for incarcerated youth. We provide care in many locations including Rady Main campus site and Grossmont Hospital, as well as other specialty service sites.

Division Chief

Erin Fisher, MD, FAAP

Our division is proud to serve as the primary teaching faculty for all UCSD medical students and for pediatric, medicine-pediatric, and family practice residents from UCSD and 5 other local programs. We were one of the first to create a PHM fellowship program, and have been integrally involved in the growth of the field of pediatric hospital medicine. We are highly active in quality improvement and clinical research in many areas including human factors related to quality improvement, obesity, sepsis, patient safety, clinical pathways, complex care, patient experience, among others.
