BASIC Fetal Heart Monitoring

This workshop was developed for the RN with 0-6 months experience in L&D. The course will define methods of monitoring, instrumentation, physiology and pathophysiology of the FHR, FHR characteristics, as well as review common antenatal testing methods. By the end of the course, the participant will be able to recognize basic FHR patterns and describe appropriate nursing interventions. Both lecture and practical strip review will be utilized to assist the learner. This course is a part of the Maternal Newborn Nursing Care Course (MNNC). If you are registered for the MNNC, you do not need to sign up for the Basic Fetal Monitoring course separately.

Basic Course Details

REQUIRED TEXT BOOK – There is no required textbook for students taking the Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring section.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT – Provider is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 07257. Seven (7) contact hours are provided for this course.

PRETEST/PREREQUISITES - Pretest is not required for students taking the Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring section.

COURSE FEE(S) - Course fee is $175. Fee includes electronic copies of course material. Paper copies of the course material are available for an additional fee ($30). Refreshments are provided; lunch is not included.

REFUND POLICY – Due to materials which need to be prepared and ready before the first day of class, the following refund policy has been implemented: A full refund will be given if written cancellation is received within TWO weeks of the start of class. Written cancellations received within ONE week of the start will be assessed a processing fee of $50. Refunds will NOT be given for cancellations received less than one week before the start of class, after the start of class, or for no shows.

INTERMEDIATE Fetal Heart Monitoring

This is NOT an introductory course. The AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring course was developed by AWHONN for the RN who has taken a basic fetal monitoring course. The course is a two-day workshop focusing on the application of essential fetal heart monitoring knowledge and skills. The didactic components of the course use case study analysis to teach principles of the physiologic basis of fetal heart monitoring, tracing interpretation, nursing interventions and their related physiology, and verbal and written communication skills. The skills station components are mixed with the didactic to include demonstration and practice of auscultation, Leopold' s maneuvers, placement of an IUPC and a FSE, interpretation of tracings, identification of nursing interventions, and communication and documentation.

Intermediate Course Details

REQUIRED TEXT BOOK – Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles & Practices, 5th Edition. Available from Kendall-Hunt at 800-228-0810 (workshop # TMCW148214). Please allow two to three weeks for delivery.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT – Contact hours are provided through AWHONN. Provider is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP00580. Sixteen (16) contact hours are provided for this course. Participants must attend both full days to receive credit.

PRETEST/PREREQUISITES – To facilitate successful completion of this course, participants are expected to read Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles & Practices, 5th Edition, prior to class.

COURSE SCHEDULE – This course takes place over two days. Class begins promptly at 8:00 am and ends at 4:30 pm.

COURSE FEE(S) – Registration fee is $180, plus $110 for the book for a total of $290

REFUND POLICY– A refund (minus $25 processing fee) will be given if written or telephone cancellation is received within two weeks of the start of class. Refunds will not be given for cancellations after the deadline or after the start of class or for no-shows.

ADVANCED Fetal Heart Monitoring

This is NOT an introductory course. Advanced fetal monitoring is a one-day course developed by AWHONN for the RN experienced in L/D. The advanced course reviews maternal-fetal physiology, fetal dysrhythmias, complex case scenarios, antenatal surveillance tests, and documentation & risk management.

Advanced Course Details

REQUIRED TEXT BOOK/MATERIAL– Students will be provided a materials packet on the first day of class (cost for this material is $90). Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles & Practices 5thEdition is also required. The book is available from Kendall-Hunt at 800-228-0810. (Please allow two to three weeks for delivery). Workshop #: 00A150772. Students are required to review the textbook prior to class, especially the arrhythmias and dysrhythmias section. There is a 50 question post-test based on the course material and lecture.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT – Contact hours are provided through AWHONN. Provider is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP00580. Eight (8) contact hours are provided for this course. Participants must attend the full day and take the competency exam to receive credit.

PRETEST/PREREQUISITES – AWHONN’s Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Class is a prerequisite for attendance.

COURSE SCHEDULE – This is a one day course. Class begins promptly at 7:45 am and ends at 5:00 pm.
