As one of the first Ryan Residency Training Program,
resident training in family planning is emphasized at UC San Diego. Did you
know Ken Ryan was our first Chair? The family planning experience is woven
through the program to facilitate providing more responsibility and autonomy as
residents become more experienced.
Residents learn not only the fundamental principles of family planning,
but also will be exposed to the most current family planning research. During
the early rotations, residents learn how to perform office D&Cs.
Additionally, the residents participate in the D&Es done in the OR.
UCSD has a long tradition of having residents rotate at
Planned Parenthood. This partnership allows the residents to benefit from
exceptional clinicians and experience Planned Parenthood offers.
Residents also participate in the Complex Contraception
Clinic. This clinic will allow residents to utilize the CDC's United States
Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use (USMEC) to counsel women
with complex medical conditions who need guidance choosing a contraceptive
