MSTP Admissions Committee

The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at UC San Diego is an inter-institutional collaboration that combines clinical training under the auspices of the UC San Diego School of Medicine with research training from a number of world-renowned research institutions including UC San Diego, The Scripps Research Institute, the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences, the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, and the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology.

Faculty are needed to serve on the admissions committee. The committee is chosen by the MTSP Executive Committee.

Faculty can self nominate by contacting Mary Alice Kiisel, MST Program Manager, or by asking executive leadership in the Department of Neurosciences to nominate them. The time commitment involves 5 interview days and 5 or 6 committee meetings per recruiting season. Members are also strongly encouraged to attend the reception held at the end of each interview day.

Health Sciences Faculty Council (HSFC)

About HSFC

The Health Sciences Faculty Council (HSFC) is the self-governing body of the Health Sciences Faculty. The primary tasks of the Health Sciences Faculty are to engage in research to fulfill the responsibility of the University to develop, transmit, and apply new knowledge in the health sciences; Health Sciences Faculty also advise the Vice Chancellor Health Sciences concerning various matters, including the resources necessary to perform these missions.

The HSFC sends a "preference call" email at the beginning of the calendar year to populate their committees. Interested faculty members should complete it when requested. Although there are usually more interested people than there are opportunities, the HSFC maintains a list of back-up 'volunteers'.

How to Qualify

To qualify as a volunteer, in addition to responding to the preferences-call, the faculty member should email to Patrice Lock indicating that he/she is willing to serve on any committee. This email will add the faculty member to the list of those who have expressed exceptional interest in serving. The Nominating Committee will place these individuals when possible.

Visit the HSFC website for additional options to apply for service and look for "How to Volunteer for Committee Service" alphabetically.

Neurology Clinic at UC San Diego Student-Run Free Clinic

The UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic is a non-profit program created in 1997 by and since maintained by UC San Diego medical students which provides free high-quality health care to local community members who lack any other access the health care (e.g. VA services, county medical services, etc.).

The neurology specialty clinic, which sees patients on Wednesday's at the Pacific Beach Methodist Church, is one of several specialty clinics within the student-run free clinic to which the general clinic refers patients with special needs.

The clinic and associated specialty clinics are 100% managed by students and able to meet patient's needs only through the generous volunteer work of a dedicated group of attending physicians.
