About the HIV Neurology Program

Our Goals

World-renowned for its HIV research and treatment, UC San Diego’s Department of Neurosciences is working to increase understanding of and treatments available to alleviate common neurological side-effects for people living with HIV, including:

  • Peripheral neuropathy and neuropathic pain
  • Side effects of antiretroviral drugs on the brain and nerves
  • Memory and cognitive problems
  • Brain inflammation

Enhancing the quality and timeliness of care

UC San Diego provides state-of-the-art HIV neurology specialty services to a complex population with multiple diseases. The overall goal is to enhance the quality and timeliness of care to this underserved population.

New telemedicine technology allows the program to share expertise and patient care beyond San Diego.

Discovering more about viruses and neurological complications

The Neuro-HIV specialty program’s well-developed infrastructure leads to a strong portfolio of research studies ranging from clinical trials and multidisciplinary collaborations, to molecular biology and genetics studies.
