Neurological problems in childhood can occur at any time, from birth to adulthood. Many can cause delays in development. They can affect the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and the muscles.
Some disorders such as cerebral palsy can be permanent but vary in severity, and other disorders such as epilepsy can disappear as a child matures.
Many neurological disorders can affect limited parts of the brain, or the entire brain. Some disorders, such as strokes, occur once and can have permanent consequences. Others, like epilepsy, are more chronic with recurrent electrical storms of the brain. And some disorders may cause slow deterioration of the brain, spinal cord or muscles.
