About Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer's Disease Research Center

The Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (SMADRC) is in the Department of Neurosciences at the University of California, San Diego. We are one of 33 university-based sites funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) National Institute on Aging (NIA) to collect and contribute data to the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC) to faciliate collaborative research.

What We Do

Our center conducts research studies dedicated to understanding the causes, clinical features, and treatments for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related memory disorders.

  • Carry out research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of AD
  • Act as a local and national resource by providing research subjects, data, and materials to researchers in AD and related disorders
  • Provide training opportunities for clinicians and researchers
  • Educate professionals and the community regarding AD
  • Provide outreach to the diverse San Diego community regarding diagnosis, treatment, and care for persons with AD

Our Research

Our center is dedicated to understanding the causes, clinical features, and treatments for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related memory disorders. To accomplish this, we invite community volunteers with and without memory loss to participate in research studies. Many of these volunteers donate their time once a year to complete an extensive clinical and neuropsychological examination. On some years, they also participate in blood draw, lumbar puncture, brain imaging, skin biopsy, and other biomarker protocols. Brain donation at the end of life makes it possible to understand how pathology in the brain might be detectable during life by association with the clinical and biomarker features that study participants volunteer to complete.
