COPD and Obstructive Sleep Apnea

‚ÄčOur research team at UC San Diego is conducting a study to learn more about the disorder termed "overlap syndrome," in which a patient has both chronic obstructive pulmnonary disease (COPD) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We are currently seeking volunteers who have been diagnosed with both COPD and OSA and using CPAP treatment for their OSA. Maximum compensation for completing entire study:



  • Age 35-79 years
  • Known diagnosis of COPD
  • Non-smoker
  • What you may be asked to do during this study:

  • A home sleep test, if necessary, to determine presence and severity of OSA
  • Two overnight sleep studies at our UCSD Hillcrest sleep laboratory
  • Pulmonary function testing
  • Complete study questionnaires regarding sleep patterns and daytime sleepiness
  • Blood sample drawn
  • Non-invasive test which measures blood vessel function
  • Breathing tests while awake, to determine your body's response to mildly low oxygen and high carbon dioxide
